About JALDI

Justice Access and Lowering Delays in India (JALDI) is a multi-year mission to comprehensively study, understand and address the systemic issues in the judiciary that manifest in the form of judicial backlog, delays and an overall unsatisfactory experience while accessing justice in India. Our objective is to play an active role in creating a litigant-centric justice delivery system that works efficiently and transparently for all.

Original research forms the bedrock of our work. All our data-driven, high quality research papers segregated under five themes aim to inform key decision makers as well as general public on various aspects of the justice delivery system that are in need of reform. JALDI Portals is where we publish carefully curated datasets on specific issues concerning our courts to encourage evidence based reforms and foster further research. JALDI Lab is an avenue to convert our research into impactful solutions through interdisciplinary collaborations and extensive consultations.

‘Vidhi has in its last 5 years produced a number of very well-researched reports and worked with the judiciary and the governments to make speedy justice a reality. Particularly, its exhaustive data-driven research will be very useful in finding solutions to upgrade India’s legal system and make e-courts function effectively in the interest of the ordinary litigant.’

'Good judicial infrastructure is need of the hour. However, there is no documentation prepared by the High Courts on what are the requirements of a court complex. JALDI in 2018 filled this vacuum. While developing the Warangal District Court complex in the state of Telangana when I was the administrative judge of that District, I have extensively relied on various parameters indicated in the report to improve the infrastructure and make it one of the best District judicial complexes in the country. Continuing with the earlier good work done by them they set out to prepare New Design Court Handbook. I have been closely following the efforts made by them in preparing this report. It is comprehensive and covers all aspects of a judicial complex. I am confident that this Handbook will be of immense help for the High Courts to plan and establish modern court complexes in respective states.'

'This excellent report justifies my consistent demand for permanent regional benches & constitutional bench of #SupremeCourt. If the Constitution Bench sits permanently all year, important constitutional matters can be decided expeditiously.'

‘I am particularly grateful for JALDI’s assistance in streamlining the case classification system which is essential for the e-court programme of any justice dispensation system. In August 2018 when I took over, there were some 300 odd case categories. An extremely careful exercise was undertaken by the JALDI team and with their in-depth study and careful analysis, we were able to narrow down the same to only 34 manageable categories.’

Former Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu & Kashmir

‘Team JALDI’s sense of urgency, commitment and intellectual heft helped to progress each of the projects undertaken under the aegis of the e-Committee. Some of the projects in which JALDI was involved are: Phase 3 vision document, live streaming rules and Judicial Information Management Policy. These projects are good illustrations of JALDI’s worth and contribution in expanding the footprint of access to justice.’

‘I am glad we engaged Vidhi to undertake a study of the most litigious departments in Karnataka. The Vidhi JALDI team led by Deepika Kinhal were committed and thorough in their efforts to diagnose the problems holistically. They focused on all three prongs of the problem - people, process and technology and have given doable ideas to reduce government litigation.’
